Wilkinson County was the 29th Georgia county and was formed May 11, 1803 from lands ceded from the Creek Indians in 1802
and 1805. The county was named after General James Wilkinson, an
officer of the Revolutionary War. The land was distributed by the
Georgia Land Lotteries and families came
from all areas of the country in search of this free land. The
county seat of Wilkinson County is Irwinton which was incorporated December
4, 1816 and named for Georgia Governor Jared Irwin. Wilkinson County lost
courthouses to fire in 1829, 1854, 1864 and 1924.
Surrounding counties are
Baldwin,
Washington,
Jones,
Twiggs
& Laurens.
